"In riding a horse, we borrow freedom" - Helen Thompson

The EARTH Centre is a Non-Profit Company made up of individuals who are passionate about strengthening and educating special needs and disabled people through horses. We believe that all disabled people should have the opportunity to access a high quality therapy that can improve their lives. The development of our country's disabled people is paramount to ensuring the success of our communities, and building South Africa as a nation.

The EARTH Centre specialises in Equine Assisted Programmes that cater for disabilities such as Cerebral Palsy, Downs Syndrome, Autism, ADD / ADHD and the Deaf. Most of these people come from disadvantaged backgrounds but being part of one of our programmes helps them to break out of marginalisation and integrate positively into society.

Most of our work relies on sponsorship from philanthropic organisations and the public. We have over 50 volunteers assisting us weekly with the 140 children that are currently riding at our centre.

In 2019 there were...

Horse Riding Therapy goes above and beyond what can be achieved in a therapy room. The therapy is provided by a horse, whose movement is the key factor, as well as a qualified Instructor and well-trained volunteers.

In our EduRide programme, qualified instructors provide classical style dressage and jumping lessons from beginner to advanced level while catering for special needs students, on the horse and on the ground! In the Equitherapy programme, instructors focus on developing foundational skills from horseback.

We partner with professional coaches and Corporate Educators to provide interactive sessions with our horses based on individual and company needs. The learning is experiential - participants learn about themselves and their relationship to the world, through the activities with horses.

We are 100% committed to being a living, growing centre and one that is sustainable in every pillar. This is achieved by:

  • Reaching out to socially isolated, marginalised, disadvantaged, and disabled communities through our programmes

  • Working with a business and events greening company to ensure that our impact on the environment is minimized, and focused on regeneration

  • Running income generating programmes thatcurrently cover 30% of our costs, and reaching out to sponsors to help support the above-mentioned communities
